When did it all begin? At what age did you start smoking?
At the age of 16.

2. What was your first cigar?
Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No 2. It was my father's favourite smoke and, yes, he did smoke in the car!

3. How would you describe the pleasure of smoking cigars?
If a good cigar, similar to that of drinking a great wine, but with more complexity. Both contribute extraordinarily well to a HANG OVER! 

Which is your favorite cigar?
Still the Hoyo de Monterrey Epicure No 2.

How many cigars do you smoke?
Four or five on a good day; perhaps only one if the sun is not shining.

At what time of the day do you enjoy your cigars the most?
After an afternoon's gentle exercise and a magnificent dinner in excellent company.

What are your favorite cigars for special events?
It's always fun experimenting with cigars and keeping something  exceptional for a special occasion. This might be a gift or something aged in my humidor for a few years. 

How do you light your cigars? Do you have a special lighter?
I tend to use matches. I always lose lighters.

My drawing room at home.

I would like to smoke a cigar with Napoleon Bonaparte and discuss his disastrous Egyptian campaign and how he balanced nepotism and despotism with the values of equality and liberty. 

Is there a special ‘cigar moment’ in your life you would like to share with us?
Not sure I really can!

Where do you keep your cigars?
I have a humidor in my bedroom in London and my drawing room at home in Oxfordshire.

You enjoy your cigars with a glass of … ?
A good claret like Chateau Lynch Bages 2005 or dram of malt whisky like Glenfiddich 25 year old.

How would you describe your passion for smoking to a non-smoker?
Another dimension to your life and cheaper than horses and boats, but goes well with them.

How much money did you spend on your most expensive cigar?
I am not extravagant. Perhaps £50.

Is there a cigar which you would love to try that you haven’t smoked yet?
I would like to try a Daniel Marshall Golden Cigar.

The most beautiful humidor you have seen?
The Cohiba humidor at the Habanos Cigar Festival Gala Dinner, 2016.
